DOES MACENC INCLUDE CHARTS PROI was comparing the Axiom 9, same size as an iPad unless you get the iPad Pro which costs as much. DOES MACENC INCLUDE CHARTS WINDOWS 10Ok, good, it runs on an obsolete OS, that is marginally better than Windows 10 (well, way better in context, not nearly as good as Windows XP and way below a real OS), that is no longer sold by it's owner for some 3 years now and will no longer have even security updates in one more. So it's nice if you 'happen to have' an iPad that you want for occasional use, but figure a short service life if used on a boat. Perhaps that's how we got to this thread. Keeping up with hardware and OS changes is a big headache for small app developers. As an example, when I bought the iPad I have now, that particular new model (iPad Pro9.7) was found to process graphics differently from all of the others and crashed when chart images were zoomed this took software people (including the iNavX, Fugawi and Navionics folks) months to resolve, which they had to do with new app releases for all of the iPads. Navigation apps are probably not important to the operating system architects. Additionally, as these devices are updated, older 'apps' etc may not work. IPads with GPS are not cheap (a direct replacement for mine is actually about the same in USD as a new raymarine axiom 7" plotter), not water resistant , have a VERY fragile power socket (and you will need to charge it in use, mine uses a lot of power), fragile generally (and it will get dropped), and you will need a good mounting system (I use Scanstrut) plus an iPad, like a phone, cannot be allowed to sit in direct sun or it will overheat and quit. However there are some things to think about before committing to an iPad for navigation: ![]() I use an iPad because I already have one (sunk cost), and (like many people) I use it for music etc on the boat (bluetooth speakers) anyway. Sad to say CHS has never had even a tiny fraction of the resources NOAA has had for chart activities. DOES MACENC INCLUDE CHARTS UPDATEI talked to someone from either the cdn coastguard or CHS a year ago about a chart update issue and, they told me basically, the CHS effort is on a shoestring budget. My past knowledge of companies bought by Johnson Outdoors does not fill me with confidence that the products developed by Fugawi will continue to be available, even if they appear to be valuable and there is money to be made supporting them so I guess this gives us all a year to figure out an alternative plan. I got the impression that developing quilted charts was a big job for them and they were aware of the difficulty of competing with Navionics. This was at a boat show in Vancouver. He was right, I found the quilted charts much more practical (not to mention cheaper). Last year, a very helpful Fugawi employee from Toronto persuaded me to go for their quilted charts for my iPad to run in iNavX (I already had the individual CHS charts* for my area/GPSNavX on my macbook *updates for these are via Fugawi not CHS) - a couple of years prior to this he had helped me by email sort out a download issue with the CHS charts. ![]()
